"O ‘Netscape Navigator’ era o «browser» de eleição no início da World Wide Web. A sua primeira versão ostentava uma caravela na página principal. A responsabilidade cabia a Tony Fernandes, um português que dirigia o desenho de interfaces da Netscape. Tony Fernandes, um veterano da Lotus e Apple, havia abandonado Portugal com dez anos de idade. Do país guardou a memória das caravelas, Sumol de laranja (que adora), e um conselho do pai: “desengoma-te”."
Tenho vaga recordação dessa imagem, mas este splash screen da versão 2.0 (que será familiar a muitos de nós que andarão na casa dos 30 anos) deve ter tido a mesma inspiração.
O que eu não sabia era o que o António Câmara referiu, que o responsável por isto, Tony Fernandes (não confundir com o também luso descendente dono da Air Asia) era Português, fez parte da equipa da Netscape, fundou o Netscape's User Experience Group e o Apple/Claris Human Interface Group e actualmente é o CEO da theUEgroup.
Os Contemporâneos É assim que se chama o mais previsível flop da RTP dos últimos tempos, e nem seria necessário ver o primeiro episódio para saber que ia ser fraquinho. Pelo primeiro programa a coisa promete... ir pelo mesmo caminho que foi o 'Hora H' do Herman na SIC. Em comum têm na equipa o mesmo guionista .
"Ah e tal vamos afinar o conceito, ouvir as sugestões". Mas não era isso que diziam com o 'Hora H' antes de começarem todos a abandonar o barco ? Porque é que agora iria ser diferente ? Vai ser certinho, qual benefício da dúvida qual quê.
Liberalização do domínio .pt adiada... de novo "A liberalização do domínio .pt, prevista para 1 de Maio, foi adiada sem nova data para entrar em vigor, estando pendente da análise, por parte do Ministério da Ciência e Tecnologia, de um parecer enviado pela Fundação para a Computação Científica Nacional (FCCN), disse fonte da FCCN."
Que parecer é este ?
"Em Janeiro, o Ministério da Ciência e Tecnologia solicitou à FCCN que pedisse pareceres a algumas associações empresariais sobre o domínio .pt. Segundo Luísa Gueifão, "os pareceres já foram recolhidos e entregues ao Ministério da Ciência e Tecnologia". "Estamos dependentes de uma decisão do Ministério", acrescentou a responsável."

Será que quem tem poder/recursos/know-how para registar um domínio .pt irá "abrir mão" disso para que "o povo" possa registar o que quiser ? Será que vamos ter uma liberalização de fachada ? Medo.

Sinceramente tenho mixed feelings acerca disto. Se por um lado isto é usado como justificação para o combate à evasão fiscal, por outro não vejo como possa ser. Quem o combate é o governo e o próprio já tem acesso a esta informação. Torna-la pública teria que propósito ? A denúncia por parte dos cidadãos ?
Se me falassem em levantamento do sigilo bancário, aí sim vejo lógica. Agora que interesse tenho eu, para além da mera curiosidade, em saber quanto o vizinho de baixo ganha por ano ? E já não falo em termos de privacidade... ainda ia descobrir os biscates que ele fazia ali na Via Norte. Ah espera, isso não se declara. :->
London for four
So I was back to the Kingdom this weekend with her and friends.
The last time I was there I was "stationed" at St Francis College in Letchworth... some 15 years ago.
Making a long story short... here are some highlights.
Ryanair. The food (payed for) sucks, they were always late and they make you walk on the tarmac (I wonder if they do the same on rainy days). I guess you get what you payed for.
In the first day, we moved from the hotel we were suposed to stay in to a better one in the heart of Piccadilly. I'm not forgetting the "Can we first see the rooms ?" line any time sooner. ;-) Basically the first one was falling apart "victorian style" (as we were told by the clerk), the second one was nice and in the heart of Piccadilly, along side Trocadero.
Regarding food, we made some bad choices in the beginning. Nice food the following days, mostly Italian. We met a portuguese waitress and all... the downside of course were the price tags. £100 a dinner for four every day kind of sucks.
Sure, I went to the Apple Store. I would kill myself if I wouldn't. :) Beautifull building. They know how to build stores as they do computers. Loved Hamleys also.
Had my first Starbucks, a 'macchiato' or something, not bad. Too bad they don't sell those mugs, only some collectable ones. Regarding everyday coffees... believe me, I had worst expressos here in Portugal, but not with that price tag. :(
Nice 'hop on, hop off' bus tour. London Bridge (saw it open which is a rare event I was told), Tower of London ("you can't see the Bloody Tower because of those bloody trees") :-D , the City, Big Ben ("fortunately the guy wasn't named Richard"), House of Lords, Westminster (expensive and with a lot burried people), Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery (it's free), Buckingham (the change of the guard is over rated), London Eye (which malfunctioned), Madame Trousseau (what a joke), Hide (lots of squirrels) and Green Park, etc etc. We saw it all.
The tube... yup, it's old and everything, but the time we wait for the train is near zero compared to ours. Great service, we abused it alot. Oh, and they even refunded our Oyster card.
Must upload some photos to Flickr as soon I get an USB cable for the camera (it's at the parents home).
The title, to be fair, should have been "London for four... and a half"
iGoogle com temas portugueses Se há uma coisa que não se pode dizer é que o Google Portugal não se está a mexer.
Depois de lançar a versão em Português de Portugal (is there another ?) do Gmail, lançou agora temas/themes para o iGoogle com imagens de conhecidos Portugueses.
Wasting your time and money with Logoworks Sometime ago I was looking to redesign ITJobs logo/brand for a new site redesign (including features, the works). While searching for a designer or company that would do the new logo I realized that everyone would say "yes, you pay for the service even if you don't like the end result". I do understand that, everyone works like that, but even looking at a companies portfolio doesn't guarantee that you end up with a good service. And this was the case with Logoworks...
So, one of this days someone sugested Logoworks.
I didn't remembered to check them at the time, but I knew them from last year's HP acquisition news. It seemed no web "2.0 service", they had a very nice logo portfolio gallery and above all, they had a "stop loss" option.
That work like this... you subscribed to what plan you would like (number of designers, number of initial proposals, number of revisions). You would then brief them on the design/brand and they would get back to you with the initial logo concepts. At that time, you would have two options, choose one logo to work with and pay the full service, or... give up and cut your loss short (for just $99).
I thought that was fair, and subscribed a gold plan which included 3 designers, 6 logo concepts and unlimited revisons.
Then I had to complete a creative brief so that they understand your service/brand, your vision, etc. That worked very well... simple forms, you could upload your old logo, tell them what you liked in it, what you didn't, what colors you liked, what colors you didn't like, if you wanted a logo or just lettering, etc, etc.
And then, you anxiously wait 3/4 days for your logo concepts...
I was speechless. Who the hell designed this ? The designer's 5 year old kids ?
They even sent me 2 "free" concepts which totaled 8 logo concepts. I could not choose one I liked. They all looked clipart taken from some cheap CD offer with ITJobs written in some random font.
I could not understand, with their sample galery, how could have they done such a terrible job. All logos looked amatour to say the least. Don't even mention the "it might be the briefing's fault"... there's not an inch of creativity in there.
I stoped the proccess right there, told them why I didn't wanted to continue (they never contacted me) and payed $99 for the "experience".
So yes, I'm burned with this "we create something for you, you pay even if you don't like it".
I'm getting back to this subject next week... I'm thinking of a contest to design the ITJobs logo. Interested ? There's money and anonymity (if you require it) involved and everyone will vote on the desing. Details later..

Tem 32 anos, é natural de Vila Nova de Famalicão mas mora no Porto desde que veio para a universidade... bem, morou. Agora já casado, está pela Maia. Anda pela internet há já uns 12 anos tendo trabalhado em vários projectos como foram o caso do Mail.pt ou no Sapo. Nos tempos livres vai tendo tempo para fazer umas brincadeiras, entre as quais o ITJobs o Lusocast o Hispanocast ou o Destakes
De resto já bloga há uns 7 anos apesar de ter perdido parte da "vida" numa mudança de hosting provider. Algumas restias ainda por aí andam... ah, e o email de contacto está no footer. Btw... job offers are welcome!
