Pine "I use Gmail for my personal e-mail -- 15 to 20 e-mails a day -- but on my work e-mail I get as many as 700 to 800 a day, so I need something really fast. I use an e-mail application called Pine, a Linux-based utility I started using in college. It's a very simple text-based mailer in a crunchy little terminal window with Courier fonts" Marissa Mayer VP, Search Products and User Experience, Google
VP of User Experience ? Pine ? The mind boggles...

so..?
The User Experience of reading email doesn't have to be the same for everyone... for an experienced user, pine, with all its shortcuts and quick usage might be a best UX than using thunderbird.
I agree it's kind of odd, though. ;) por André Luís a 9 Março 2006 - 16:41
Sometimes, the old ways still win
Marissa's comment on email is easily understood by many who first used "old-style" text interfaces and later experienced the contrast with point-and-click ones, particularly in terms of the maximum speed one is able to reach.
Another possible example of a contrast appealing to the
"very speed-sensitive" like her:
at least for some tasks, the responsiveness of the old DOS XTree versus the now predominant graphic file managers.
There seems to be a confusion between (not always obvious!) ease of first-time use and later maximum efficiency. In several professional contexts (banks included?), moving people from text-mode screen forms with pure keyboard input to window-based interfaces requiring or encouraging the use of a mouse seems to have done little to improve the "user experience" AND to have done some damage to performance. Although many graphic interfaces still allow alternative manipulation via the keyboard, how frequently is the keyboard used and how well are applications optimized for it, instead of considering the keyboard as a second-class navigation device useful only for text input?
I know several people (myself included) that would still prefer, like Marissa Mayer, using mutt or Pine or other text interface if it weren't for the barrage of attachment-filled email one gets nowadays. Not because they are unable to use the new interfaces but because they have tasted "keyboard speed".
Much harder to understand as a choice in terms of user experience, by the way, is this extremely narrow, fixed-size, 6-line input field where I'm writing this comment... :-)
